Artist Statement

One side of the teapot features a portrait of Zhuge Liang, dressed in ancient attire with a solemn and composed expression. The artist captures the deep, introverted character of this wise statesman—blending the sagacity of a strategist who assesses the times with the weighty concern of one entrusted with final guardianship. In a compact composition, the painting embodies Zhuge Liang's defining qualities: simplicity of purpose and dedication to the nation.

The other side of the pot features the full text of Zhuge Liang's "Memorial on Deploying the Army." Written just before the Shu Han northern expedition, this memorial reflects his deep gratitude for Emperor Liu Bei's three visits and the weight of his final trust. The writing is simple and sincere, devoid of ornate language, expressing only heartfelt words. It recounts the hardships of building the kingdom, advises the young emperor to strengthen internal governance, favor loyal ministers, and distance himself from corrupt ones, while also declaring Zhuge Liang's lifelong ambition to restore the Han dynasty. He vows to "devote myself body and soul until my last breath," conveying profound gratitude, concern, loyalty, and responsibility.
