Work Description

Inspired by the legend of Bodhidharma meditating in front of a wall, this vessel depicts his nine-year seclusion within a cave. Seated cross-legged, Bodhidharma is portrayed with his faint reflection cast upon the rocky wall behind him. Deep, rich ink tones convey the cave's profound depth, while delicate washes highlight his transcendent spirit, capturing the majestic essence of Zen Buddhism's founding patriarch through the interplay of presence and absence.

Artist Statement

Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years—not as an act of endurance, but as the ultimate focus. In Inner Painting, capturing this focus requires every stroke to be powerful yet rooted in inner calm. This paradoxical unity is the essence of Zen.
